United Nations Human Rights Council Working Group on Business and Human Rights, Report of the Visit to Japan

On June 26, 2024, the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights reported to the Human Rights Council on the report of its investigation visit to Japan, which had been underway since last year. The Japan Center for Engagement and Remedy on Business and Human Rights (JaCER)  was recognized as a good practice for non-judicial grievance mechanism in Japan, as mentioned in the end-of-mission statement issued last August.

“26. Positive practices that the Working Group observed include establishing grievance mechanisms open to all stakeholders and setting up dedicated grievance mechanisms for the value chain. The Engagement and Remedy Platform by the Japan Center for Engagement and Remedy on Business and Human Rights is a notable example, accumulating know-how and offering a non-judicial platform for its members to achieve redress based on the Guiding Principles.” (p.6)

JaCER will continue to strengthen its efforts to support the diffusion and improvement of grievance mechanisms in the private sector in Japan, and to help rights holders who have been negatively affected by human rights violations.
